Practice 6: Be Strategically Agnostic Like Rupert Mitchell

You have to, create your own library of Alexandria. And the great thing is you can do it topic by topic. Someone sends you a book recommendation? Great. Buy it on Kindle, stick it in the Notebook [LM], right? You’ll get there eventually, but it’s part of your searchable database from today because, I’ve taken it on recommendation from someone I trust.

Welcome Listeners,

Rupert Mitchell is not only my favorite visionless rodent but a good friend and partner in crime in the markets all too often (we traffic in the same trades frequently). As you will discover in this episode, Rupert and I have a lot more than our investments in common - we see the world much the same and even the way in which we seek to learn about the world are similar. That makes for great conversation since we can bypass our filters and concentrate on the good stuff. I will absolutely have the Blind Squirrel on again and again in the future. Rupert is my favorite kind of investor - a curious and independent generalist willing to go wherever opportunity takes him. He can talk intelligently about AI models, tire manufacturing, the refining industry, or investing in space. My kind of guy and my kind of guest for this self serving podcast. One last thing that I think makes Rupert stand out is how impressively he straddles two worlds that often do not intersect. Most of my guests are (like myself) short on fancy schools, credentials, and white shoe investment firm experience. We are more like self taught knuckle dragging investors that love the game but took the back roads to it. Rupert did not take the backroads and uses his extensive experience as a force multiplier while still being an autodidactic polymath.

Cheers,

Chase

Um, do you know what? I’m rather bad at hobbies, right? The trouble with an open-ended career that we’ve both chosen is that you’re never done, right? So, you might as well adore it. You know, there is always another article to read, there’s always another paper to read, there’s always another YouTube hit to watch. It is never ending.

Show Notes:

The Transcript

This week, Chase interviews his brain doppelgänger and good friend, Rupert Mitchell, of Blind Squirrel Macro. Rupert began his finance career on the sell side of Investment Banking (pick one, he worked there) and also ran the equity syndicate desk in Hong Kong. Rupert began Blind Squirrel Macro as a way to connect with people about investing. His apt tag line is “Macro for Civilians” and this conversation stays on brand. Enjoy all of Rupert’s thoughts on space, his thankfulness for the power of a targeted ETF, and most importantly, how to approach A.I. agnostically. We must have Rupert back, because we barely scratched the surface in this episode!

This Episode’s Charity:

This week’s episode features causes close to Rupert’s heart: Guide Dogs Australia & Search and Rescue Dogs of Australia. Unfortunately, Rupert didn’t slip once, so we couldn’t help the best of Australia’s dog professionals. But you can by checking out these great charities!

I love words. And I love beautifully written things. And so, there’s absolutely no way that I would allow AI to take me away from the source completely.
